ATEC carry out Bat Surveys

ATEC carry out detailed investigations of Bat activity at sites of proposed development. This includes the assessment of habitats for roosting and feeding Bats, identification of Bat species and location of Bat roosts using ultra-sonic Bat detectors.

These electronic devices pick up ultra–sonic calls that Bats make when they are active and will pick up the pre-emergence ‘chatter’ of Bats leaving a roost at dusk and their return at dawn.

Eaves can provide suitable roosting sites for Bats

Ivy can harbour Bat roosts and attracts abundant insects for foraging
It is often difficult to identify the location of a Bat Roost, however, where a colony of Bats has occupied a site for a period of some weeks or even days, discrete evidence in the form of faecal droppings and/or urine stains may remain for weeks, months or even years.

There are eight species of Bats in Northern Ireland and they are generally active between the months of April to September and hibernate during winter. ATEC carry out full detailed Bat surveys during this period of activity.
